What is the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)? And more importantly, what is its impact on the packaging mix?
This elusive four letter acronym is the main regulatory backdrop in the EU for packaging and their lifespan. It sets out a comprehensive framework aimed at preventing packaging waste and fostering reuse and recycling of packaging. It aims at improving the environmental performance of packaging, as well as promoting the proper functioning of the European internal market. Initially a Directive, the Regulation will introduce strong recycling requirements, including Design4Recycling criteria and a recyclability at scale obligation. It will also contain new measures to reduce and reuse more packaging and put forth design requirements that promote a wider use of recycled materials.
