Blankenberge makes the Click!

Blankenberge is the second seaside town to adopt the Click project and join the fight against litter.

With an app that has 6,367 users, the Click has already won over De Haan, Antwerp and Namur, as well as specific events such as the Eneco Clean Beach Cup and the cycling world championships.

The Click project is in line with the Flemish Government’s overall anti-litter policy and Blankenberge has joined its ranks to make the town cleaner and more pleasant for its residents and its tourists.

The principle behind the Click is simple and uses a reward system for proper behaviour. With the app, users simply have to scan the packaging from their food or drinks on the go, or litter that they have picked up, or take a photo, before throwing it in the appropriate bin. This civic gesture is rewarded by Circular UCoins, a virtual currency that can be used in local stores and businesses, thereby boosting the local economy at the same time.

Did you know that no less than 20 to 25% of the contents of litter bins in streets is made up of PMD that can be recycled? Thanks to the Click, these materials are given a second life through recycling. It is the default mechanism in the creation of a circular packaging economy, alongside door-to-door collection.
